Treatment Modalities
The Golden Rule, Inc., is an intense, residential treatment facility for women who suffer from alcohol and/or drug addiction. The treatment phase evolves over a minimum of nine (9) months during which time an intense recovery curriculum is offered. The disease of addiction is approached as a disease of the mind, body and spirit. Based on the twelve steps of Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous, instruction is provided offering new coping mechanism for life's problems without the use of alcohol and drugs. AA and NA meetings are offered and required throughout the duration of treatment. Other treatment modalities include but are not limited to the following:
Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous Meetings Both AA and NA meetings are held for our residents. The 12-step format is used for on-site meetings. We also attend outside area AA and NA meetings on a regular basis. These meetings provide the foundation for our program.
Individual Counseling Individual counseling is offered weekly to address a resident's issues of a personal nature. These may range from child abuse, sexual abuse, molestation, abandonment, issues of shame, guilt and grief or eating disorders to name a few. Appropriate referral is made for continued counseling after completion of this program. Therapeutic Issues Group (Small Group) Small group counseling is held weekly with a maximum of seven participants and the facilitating counselor. This group size tends to be more comfortable for some to begin the experience of sharing their issues and receiving feedback. This group allows participants to realize that they share common areas of concern and helps to begin to build the positive connection of being open minded and taking suggestions. Clients are reassigned every 8-10 weeks to a new counselor and a new group of clients.
Relapse Prevention Group
This group meets once per week during the course of treatment. Relapse triggers are addressed and means of prevention are discussed. Suggestions for beneficial lifestyle changes are offered. Recreational activities are scheduled for our residents to demonstrate the ability to have fun without the use of alcohol and drugs. Several relapse prevention workbooks are used to enhance group participation.
Domestic Violence Group
The purpose of the domestic violence group is to address issues and problems experience during episodes of domestic violence within the household. This group acts as a support center to encourage domestic violence victims to share their stories and release some of their pain. Educational aspects of this class include recognizing signs of impendin violent behavior and means of self-protection. Guest speakers visit regularly to share their experience and hope for a better future.
Parenting Education Class
The Parenting class enrolls residents to enhance their personal parenting through communication skills. It also offers new and different parenting techniques while acting as a support center for clients. Through our collaboration with the Department of Family and Children Services are able to initiate and fulfill reunification plans while working to improve issues and/or return custodial rights to parents.
Budgeting and Finance A budgeting and finance class is offered for our residents as one means of making transition after graduation a little easier. Most times while in active addiction the ideas of budgeting or saving are far away in the universe. This class teaches the basics of preparing and using a budget, managing income, paying bills and establishing a savings account. A former bank executive volunteers and teaches this class.
Life Skills Group The life skills group addresses ways to handle life's everyday situations. While learning new methods to cope group members also use the setting as a sounding board to share their feelings related to any of the focus actions. The topics of this groups includes but is not limited to learning to deal with issues of self-esteem, depression, anger, shame, guilt, fear, anxiety, worry and perfectionism.
GED Preparation/Adult Education
Those residents without a high school diploma will dedicate time and energy while at The Golden Rule, Inc. to obtain their GED. Through our collaboration with South Georgia Technical College in Americus, Georgia, GED classes are available for our ladies with both individualized and computerized classes. After completing 40 hours of the GED prep program and achieving and maintaining a passing score, these students may take the GED exam at no cost. With passing of the GED, students are eligible to "walk" in a formal cap and gown graduation.
Other students from The Golden Rule, Inc. who do not need the GED classes are offered a Microsoft Word Certification course. This is also sponsored by South Georgia Technical College at no cost to residents.
